Inspiration Boards: The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a spectacularly-told story featuring adventure, comedy, drama, romance, and quirky characters, but what really caught our eye were the stunning colors. The color choices in this film ranged from strong, vivid hues to softer, pastel shades, but it seemed that every color on the screen was bright and chock-full of life -- like candy for your eyes. The costumes, of course, were no exception.

The Hotel

While this isn't exactly a costume, the pink gradient on the outside of the hotel provided a perfect opportunity to play with color-blocking. We used two different shades of pastel pink for the outfit itself, with touches of white and gold in the accessories -- similar to how the body of the hotel is painted two shades of pink with white trim. We chose structured pieces to mimic the architecture of the building.

Zero Moustafa - Lobby Boy

The Lobby Boy outfit was fairly easy to make. The bright hues paired beautifully and we simply translated the structured elements from the original costume into blazer with pants and peplum top with pants combos. The outfit on the left is more true to the original while the outfit on the right is a little more girly and fun with the peplum top and wire head-wrap. We found the perfect reference to the bold "LOBBY BOY" lettering on his cap with an equally loud Moschino clutch complete with the gold lettering. And of course, the outfits wouldn't have been complete without L'Air de Panache and some mustache references :).

Agatha

Agatha's look was slightly more difficult because we had a hard time deciding what pieces to use to replicate her costume. The possibilities seemed endless -- blue dress with pink long-sleeved, collared top underneath, blue skirt with pink top, pink dress with blue cardigan, etc. etc. That's why we ended up including a variety of options so you can mix and match to your heart's desire! We stuck with the soft color scheme of her uniform and tried to use simple pieces that would add just a hint of femininity to any outfit.

Madame D.

Madame D. made only a brief appearance in the film, but we couldn't resist recreating this lavish woman's look. The outfit on the left is older and more similar to the original costume while the outfit on the right is a younger and more modern twist on the look. Naturally, only timeless (and expensive) pieces, such as a quilted Chanel bag, Christian Louboutin heels, and Chanel perfume could do such a wealthy woman justice.
